Can You Add a Country to Your ATA Carnet?
Here's something that surprises a lot of first-time carnet holders: countries aren't actually listed on the carnet document itself. There's no approved-countries field, no restricted routing โ the carnet is valid in any of the 87+ member countries of the ATA Carnet system.
What does matter is having enough pages?
Every time you cross into a country, customs stamps a page called a counterfoil. Each entry and exit uses one. So the real planning question isn't "which countries are on my carnet" โ it's "do I have enough counterfoils for everywhere I'm going?"
How Many Counterfoils Do You Get?
Our standard carnet comes with enough counterfoils for 2 round trips. Our Pro carnet covers 3 round trips. For most tours and shoots, that's plenty.
If your routing is more complex โ multi-leg festival runs, back-to-back international shoots, or extended touring โ you may need more. You can request additional counterfoils either before your carnet is issued or after, and we'll ship them to you for a small additional fee.
The EU Counts as One Country
If you're touring or shooting across multiple European countries, this works in your favor. The entire EU is treated as a single customs territory for ATA Carnet purposes โ so moving from France to Germany to Italy doesn't burn through counterfoils. You use one set of pages when you enter the EU and one set when you leave, regardless of how many member states you visit in between.
Get Your ATA Carnet โ Fast & Online
Skip the customs hassle and save thousands on tariffs. EasyCarnet prepares your ATA Carnet paperwork online โ accepted in 90+ countries for equipment, trade shows, film gear, and more.
The countries that don't follow this rule are the ones that often catch people off guard. The UK, Switzerland, Norway, and other non-EU European countries each count as their own customs territory โ so each crossing in or out uses its own counterfoil. A tour that goes US โ UK โ France โ Switzerland โ Germany โ home can easily use 3โ4 times the counterfoils of a straightforward US โ EU โ home trip.
Why We Ask About Your Countries Upfront
Even though countries aren't printed on the document, we do ask about your planned destinations when you apply. Two reasons:
- Counterfoil count โ we make sure your carnet has enough pages for your full itinerary before it ships
- Country-specific rules โ a handful of countries require pre-registration or have specific customs procedures that are easier to handle before you're standing at a border
Not sure how many counterfoils you'll need, or heading somewhere with special requirements? Reach out before you apply and we'll help you map it out (support@easycarnet.com).
