MWC Barcelona (Mobile World Congress) is the global mobile industry's flagship event, attracting 95,000+ professionals from telecoms, handset makers, and tech companies each February. Non-EU exhibitors bringing prototypes, 5G equipment, and demo hardware to Barcelona need an ATA Carnet to clear Spanish Customs without paying EU duties — which can reach 21% IVA on electronics.
Non-EU exhibitors at MWC Barcelona need an ATA Carnet covering professional equipment, commercial samples, and exhibition goods. Spain is a full ATA Carnet convention member. The carnet is valid for up to 12 months, giving ample time for the show, any pre-show demos, and return shipping.
MWC Barcelona is held in Spain. Review the specific ATA Carnet requirements, accepted uses, and entry procedures for Spain before you travel.
Full Spain Carnet Guide6–8 weeks before MWC (early January)
Begin equipment list. MWC is in late February — post-holiday timing means carnet applications submitted after January 10 risk cutting it close.
5–6 weeks before
Submit application. Standard processing: 5–10 business days. Include all prototype and pre-production units with accurate market values.
2–3 weeks before
Receive carnet. Confirm it matches your freight manifest. MWC freight logistics are complex — sync with your forwarder early.
Arrival at BCN
Present carnet to Spanish Aduanas at El Prat. Importation vouchers are stamped. Freight arriving via Barcelona Port follows the same process.
MWC show days
Keep carnet at your stand. Spanish Customs may verify large exhibits during the show.
Post-MWC departure from Spain
Obtain re-exportation stamps from Aduanas before equipment leaves Spain. Do not skip this step — it is required for discharge.
Within 2 weeks of return
Return completed carnet to EasyCarnet for USCIB or Canadian Chamber discharge.
